Amending Clay-Heavy Soil

If you’ve moved to Northern Fort Worth, and you’re wondering why nothing will grow in your lawn, compacted clay soils are likely the culprit. In this post, I’ll give you guys a few solutions to amend your clay soil.

First of all, why does clay soil make it so difficult to grow your plants? It makes it difficult because clay soil has low porosity! Clay particles are so small that the spaces – pores – between the particles cannot fit much through. This makes it difficult for plants used to loamy soils to push out roots, and it makes their roots more likely to become waterlogged. It also makes your soil more prone to hardening and compaction.

Low porosity isn’t entirely a bad thing because this also means that clay soil holds on to tons of nutrients! Once you’ve balanced the texture of your soil, your plants will be set up for success.

Moving on to solution number one: gypsum. Gypsum is a soil additive that is high in calcium. This helps aggregate your soil because of the difference in chemical charges between clay and calcium. Clay has a natural negative charge to it, and calcium has a charge of +2. This means that your clay soil will go from super fine particles, to clumps of particles! Gypsum artificially increases soil porosity!

However, if you do not want to worry about the calcium levels of your soil, solution number two might be more up your alley: adding organic matter! Adding organic matter to your soil helps to reduce soil hardening, which clay soil is very prone to. Organic matter can come in many different forms, including compost, mulch, grass clippings, and manure. Organic matter also feeds organisms that help aerate your soil, like earthworms!

This leads us to our third solution: aeration! Aeration is the process of adding airflow into the soil, which is very similar to increasing soil porosity. This can be done in multiple ways. A few ways to improve aeration include: supporting soil organisms, which we just mentioned; growing cover crops for a season; or mechanically aerating your land. Soil organisms aerate the soil when they burrow through the ground, leaving small tunnels and breaking up compaction. Cover crops help aerate the soil because of their roots, which break up the soil and keep it aggregated once they begin to decompose.
